Prospective Undergraduates
I didn’t know what to expect when I started at UNH, but it didn’t take long for me to find a place for myself in the microbiology department. Everyone in the department is extremely friendly and supportive. Almost all of the classes that I took in the department had labs required as well and even though it seems like a lot of work, the labs were all very structured and not only did they help to back up what we were learning in class, they all taught me a lot of techniques that will be useful in whatever microbiology job that I take. Through the department, I also found a lab to do my undergraduate thesis in and with their support I applied for and was awarded an undergraduate research grant through UROP that helped to fund my work. All of this background helped me get a summer internship at the Centers for Disease Control and a placement in a doctoral program at Duke University. The microbiology department at UNH really helped to set me up for a better future than I may have had at many of the others universities in New England. --Afton McGowen class of 2005
Individuals considering a major in microbiology are strongly encouraged to enroll in MICR 503 and organic chemistry in their sophomore year. Requirements in the biology core curriculum may be deferred until the subsequent year, if necessary.
Students wishing to declare a major should consult the Departmental Chair.
